5,000 Persons Displaced By Fulani/Tiv Crisis In Nasarawa

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says more than 5,000 people have been displaced following the crisis that erupted between Tiv farmers and the Fulani cattle rearers in Doma and Keana local government areas of Nasarawa State.The agency made the announcement in a statement by its Zonal Information Officer, North Central, Mr Audu Yohanna.The statement quoted Alhaji Aliyu Danjuma, NEMA's North Central Zonal Coordinator, representing the agency's Director-General, Mr Muhammad Sanni-Sidi, who conducted a team round the affected communities, as saying that the agency sympathised with the people over the incident.The internally displaced persons were seen in their thousands in Doma Central Primary School and the Roman Catholic Mission School, Kadarko, in Giza Development Area of Keana Local Government Area.The statement said that in Doma Local Government Area, there were 2,198 internally displaced persons, while there were3,300 in Keana Local Government Area.It quoted the displaced persons as appealing to NEMA to provide them with security, food and medical facilities, saying there were imminent signs of malaria outbreak in the two camps.The statement assured the victims of NEMA's prompt response to their plight, stressing that the agency's mandate was to respond to emergencies.It named the affected communities as Audori, Akpata, Rukubi, Akpanaja, Agyema, Idadu, Gidanrai, Ankome and Agimaka.The Director of Social Services, Doma Local Government Area, Mr Abdu Maikudi, commended the agency for the visit, and called for swift response to alleviate the suffering of the people.
