FRSC Seeks Support To Rid Motor Parks Of Alcohol

Published by Tribune on Sat, 10 Dec 2011

The Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Jonas Agwu, has called on all stakeholders to support the commission's move to rid motor parks of the sale of alcohol.Agwu made the call in Lagos at the kick-off of the corps 'Ember Months' road safety campaign at the Ojota Motor Park.It was learnt that the campaign with the slogan 'Don't drink and drive', was jointly organised by the FRSC and the Nigeria Breweries Plc.'Majority of recent road crashes are attributed to drivers indulging in alcoholic intakes, hence the need to nip it in the bud,' Agwu said.He stated that the FRSC was soliciting the support of the media and other stakeholders in putting up a bill that would outlaw the sale of alcohol in the parks.'We had been battling this menace within the ambit of the corps law for some years now.'We need the support and cooperation of other stakeholders, especially the media and union leadership, in seeing to its legislation,' he said.Agwu urged the drivers to adhere strictly to road safety rules and regulations, especially during the 'Ember months', to reduce road accidents.Mr Osita Chidoka, FRSC's Corps Marshall and Chief Executive, in a message to the event, said the corps had recently deployed 345 V-Sat technologies to improve communication among its staff nationwide. He decried the increasing rate of road crashes resulting from motorcycle operations, saying the trend posed a serious challenge to the corps and other stakeholders.'For those of us in Lagos, it is sad to recall that a ward has been dedicated by the management of Igbobi Hospital to motorcycle-related crashes,' he said.Mr Vivian Nkem, who represented the Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria Breweries, Mr Nicolaas Vervelde, said that the company was fully committed to the commission's campaign for zero tolerance to road crashes during the 'Ember months'.'In spite of the tendency for a reduction in sales as a result of the campaign, we are fully committed to its success.A major highlight of the campaign was the distribution of crash elements by the brewery to hundreds of motorcycle operators who attended the event.
