Published by Guardian on Sat, 10 Dec 2011

THIS year's edition of the Nigeria Private Universities Games, tagged 'OGHARA 2011' will flag off on Tuesday, just as the host institution, Western Delta University (WDU), has promised to stage a hitch-free event. The Games, which is the 4th in the series, will see athletes and officials from the participating universities arriving Oghara tomorrow ahead the official opening ceremony on Tuesday. It will last for nine days. The Vice-Chancellor of Western Delta University, Prof. Peter Hugbo, said yesterday that all that was needed to make the game a huge success had been put in place.Hugbo stated that although, WDU is relatively new, having being established in 2008, it enjoys standard facilities good enough to host such a big event.According to him, sporting events will hold at Oghara Township Stadium, while swimming event will be staged at the University of Benin Swimming Pool in Benin City, a distance of less than 20 minutes drive. He said: 'We have two excellent students hostels with standard facilities for the athletes. There are three 32-Seater air-conditioned buses available to convey participants to sports grounds. Like I said, the university is new, but won't disappoint our visitors.'The Western Delta University, after recording an unprecedented success with National Universities Commission (NUC) , by having all of its courses accredited in March this year, enjoys relative security, as a Mobile Police headquarters, as well as Naval Base is located in the town.Oghara town itself is one of the fastest growing towns in Nigeria with a number of state-of-the-art hotels, as well as a College of Education and a Polytechnic. The town also houses an ultra-modern University Teaching Hospital. The famous Oghara Township Stadium, where most of the sporting events of the games will take place, had played host to a number of national and international football matches, including the African Women Championship (AWC) in 2002 and 2006.The maiden edition of the Games was hosted by Igbinedion University, Okada in December 2005, featuring athletes and officials from only five institutions. The second edition was hosted by Leads City University, Ibadan, in December 2007 with 10 universities in attendance. The American University of Nigeria, Yola, hosted the third edition two years ago.
