Of Lipsticks And Other Matters

Published by Guardian on Sat, 10 Dec 2011

EARLY this week, Nigerians celebrated raucously as the National Assembly outlawed same sex marriages. The social networks were agog with reactions from Nigerians.Interestingly, I came across an article about lipsticks for men as I browsed the net that same day. A company had created lipstick for men. In fact, the article was about the latest product in the range. Was I shocked' No. I was amused but nothing prepared me for the reactions I found as I read on. Men and lipstick do not go together, said one reader. Another said, it was a disgusting idea, as men are supposed to have muscles not red, pouting lips. The rise of homosexuality in Europe and other 'sophisticated' climes make it possible for people to create such products.Lipstick has been a product for women since it was invented and it is interesting to see how the product has evolved over the years. Right now, younger women are saying that lipstick is pass and that lip gloss is all the rage. Why' Well for many, lip gloss gives you a more natural look, and it is easier to manage. It does not stain your clothing or leave embarrassing stains on your front teeth.Others still use lipstick but in small quantities over which, they invariably layer lashings of lip gloss.Lipstick may seem old fashioned but no one can do without it, except for teenagers, perhaps. Use lipstick carefully to create a modern look, even as you enjoy the hues of your choice.Apply lipstick with a brush in the evenings. The brush ensures that tint lasts longer and is more easily blended into the lips Blot off excess colour with blotting paper or on tissue or a wet wipe, by placing the blotter between the lips and biting down gently on the paper.Dot a little lip gloss on the centre of your lips and blend into lipstick by moving your lips gently.By day a woman can get away with wearing lipgloss alone but at night, it might be a good idea to apply a solid colour on the lips and then add shine with gloss. Note that the best lipsticks are either a shade or two lighter or darker than your skin tone. What makes lipstick look dates is the fact that most women find a suitable shade and use it for years on end. This does not have to be the case because there are so many colours and textures to try on. Matt lip colour tends to be rich but it can cause lips to appear dry and parched if used without lip gloss. Creamy lipsticks are usually a good choice but watch out if your skin is oily. You might look all shiny like the moon. Glittery lip colour is great at night but leave it to the very young in the day time, as the shiny flecks can get trapped in the lines on mature lips, leaving you looking 'old.'We women of colour have a wide palate to choose from. Beautiful wines, deep reds, and even some orange shades look good on us. African woman with very fair complexion can enjoy light pinks, nudes and light browns with as much pleasure as darker sisters reveal in burgundy, plum, berry purple and so on. To find the colour that works best for you, you must be ready to experiment till you find that special, hue.
