Fashola's Wife Lauds Maternal Mortality Reduction Initiative

Published by Guardian on Sat, 10 Dec 2011

WIFE of Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola has expressed satisfaction with the progress being made by the state government in achieving the targets of safe pregnancy and delivery by mothers, as well as the protection of newborn children up to five years old against avoidable challenges and deaths. The targets were the focal objectives of the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week celebration which ended yesterday in Lagos.Speaking at the12th grand finale of the week, Fashola noted that government's commitment in the implementation of the strategy was significant, stressing that it has brought the state closer to the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 which are geared towards reducing child mortality and improving maternal health.Represented by the wife of the Head of Service, Mrs. Adenike Ogunlewe, Mrs. Fashola urged mothers and caregivers to continue to put into practice the lessons learnt during the week. She also urged them to make use of health facilities provided by government for their well being, noting that well trained health personnel are on hand to attend to their health needs.'Though the nation's ranking in the area of infant, child and maternal mortality rates is not cheerful news, it is however heart-warming and reassuring that increasing attention is being devoted to the issues of child and maternal health at the national level, especially through the adoption of the Lagos model of child week for implementation in all the states of the federation,' she said.
