Minister Urges Lawyers To Uphold Responsibilities To Nigerians

Published by Guardian on Sat, 10 Dec 2011

MINISTER of State for Education, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has appealed to Nigerian lawyers to ensure that the legal profession does not lose its responsibility to the ordinary Nigerian due to partisan interest of some members of the Bar.Speaking as the chairman of the Annual Bar Dinner of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja Branch, Wike said practitioners must strive to distinguish between partisan interest and integrity of the Bar in the interest of the nation. He said that the present situation where lawyers rate judgments and judges on the premise of how they are affected by such pronouncements leaves much to be desired.'We must endeavour to live above sentiments and partisan interest. We must realise that justice is for everyone and not for any particular group,' he stressed. The minister called on lawyers to strive towards strengthening the nation's democracy by working as positive change agents. 'The legal profession must not lose its responsibility to Nigerians. Lawyers should at all times make contributions to deepen our democracy, instead of taking actions that may negatively affect democracy,' he said.Wike added that the focus for lawyers should be to enhance quality leadership across the country, with the aim of promoting the common good of all Nigerians. In his remarks, the chairman of the NBA Abuja Branch, Mr. Afam Osigwe, said there was hope that Nigeria would attain development if it taps into its vast potentials to revamp her economy.
