Heavy security as INEC conducts rerun in Ekiti

The election rerun ordered by the Court of Appeal to fill the seat of Ekiti Central Federal Constituency II at the House of Representatives conducted on Saturday was peaceful.The turnout of voters for the election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission was fairly impressive as voters were seen as early as 10am queuing for accreditation.Our correspondent, who monitored the poll in Efon, Ijero and Ekiti-West Local Government Area, observed that there was a heavy presence of armed security personnel at entry points into all the towns in the constituency.Two police armoured personnel carriers, manned by heavily armed men, were seen patrolling the areas where elections were conducted. Also, a police helicopter also hovered round the area to assist policemen stationed at various flashpoints.Some armed soldiers were also sighted in about five patrol vans at Aramoko, the headquarters of Ekiti-West Local Government Area.It was however gathered that there was a case of ballot snatching in a polling unit in Araromi-Ekiti in Ijero Local Government Area.The acting Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Victor Babayemi, told SUNDAY PUNCH that policemen arrested eight hoodlums who attempted to snatch ballot boxes in Okemesi-Ekiti.He added that one of the hoodlums was found with five voter cards.
