How to achieve peace in Africa ' Jonathan

Published by Punch on Sun, 11 Dec 2011

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday said African leaders must learn to reach a consensus on certain issues in other to enhance peace, political stability and progress on the continent. He also said the leaders must work collectively to achieve the developmental objectives of the African Union.President Jonathan spoke when President Jacob Zuma of South Africa paid him a visit at the State House, Abuja. He said greater efforts should be made to ensure that decisions taken by African Heads of State and Government under the auspices of the AU were faithfully implemented. He said, "African leaders must agree on a common position on certain issues and speak with one voice."It is not enough for the African Union to just take a position on issues; action must also follow in support of our position." The two leaders discussed recent developments in Libya, Cote DIvoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo and other parts of Africa. They agreed that the forthcoming AU summit should address these developments and facilitate peace and political stability in Africa.A mild drama however occurred at the Shehu Musa YarAdua Memorial Lecture where Zuma was a guest speaker when former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar was invited to introduce the SA President.Atiku said he and Zuma were Vice-Presidents who were persecuted and politically bruised by their bosses. While acknowledging the presence of dignitaries at the event, Atiku inadvertently skipped ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was seated with him on the high table. An aide drew Atikus attention to the omissionand he apologised to his former boss. Also on Saturday, President Jonathan received the outgoing Pakistani High Commissioner to Nigeria, Maj.-Gen. Asif Duraiz Akhtar.
