The Other Sides Of Thanksgiving

WE love, at the end of a year, to offer thanks for tender mercies. Thanksgivings, however, come in different shapes and sizes. While some are uncomfortably fat to gain admittance to the hall of modest testimonies, others leave the congregation debating what the goodness of God actually means.Hands waving, feet stomping, voice high-pitched, Sister Angela did the traditional 'Praise! Praise!! Praise The Lord!!!' And the worshippers thundered the corresponding 'Halleluyah!Her testimony: 'I want to bless the Lord for delivering me from destruction in 2011. The Devil wanted me to go to hell. He attacked me with the spirit of fornication in May. And I began to sleep around with men. The battle was so tough. In fact, even some so-called brothers in the church''At this point, pin drops would have clattered noisily. There was palpable apprehension as the voice of the moderator spoke into a microphone, 'Sister Angela, move straight to your testimony. Move straight to your testimony.'Charged with the message of a miraculous deliverance from what she called, 'demons of immorality', Sister Angela unfortunately understood the moderator's words to mean 'hit the nail on the head'. And she continued: 'In fact, the Devil wanted to use me as a tool to scatter this church because our deacons and' and''At this point again, the testimony was terminated. It was interruption finale as the microphone was seized and Angela asked to return to her seat.The church was, however, divided. While some felt the 18-year old undergraduate ought to have been given opportunity to express her gratitude, others argued she violated codes of propriety.Hands in the air, feet stomping, voice-baritone, Brother Tony did the 'Praise! Praise!! Praise the Lord!!!' Again the congregation answered: 'Halleluyah!!!'His testimony: 'Since I started my business in January, things have not moved well. Sometimes, during an entire week, I would not have a customer. It was difficult to feed my family. Also, I could not complete the house project I embarked upon. Today, I am thankful because all that has changed. Customers are now flowing like water. Sometimes, they are so many that I direct them to other colleagues. I have also moved into my new house.'The last words elicited a resounding ovation. And as Tony made for his seat, the moderator asked, 'Tell us what you do for a living''Grinning from ear to ear, Brother Tony replied: 'I operate an ambulance service.
