Sultan Blames Leaders, Injustice For Nation's Woes

Published by Guardian on Sun, 11 Dec 2011

THE Sultan of Sokoto and President Supreme Council for Islam Affairs, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar has accused Nigerian leaders of being behind the nation's misfortune.According to the Royal Father it is the injustice in the country that is responsible for the way Nigerians are behaving, saying that if there is no good governance there will not be good people in the polity.Speaking at the 5th Annual Conference of the Muslim Lawyers of Nigeria (MULAN) in Kaduna, Sultan said 'I want to make it very clear that the problems facing us in this country are largely due to injustice minted out to some people and if you are talking of injustice, we don't have good governance and if there is no good governance, there cannot be good people.Sa'ad who is the spiritual head of Muslims in Nigeria and known for his frank approach to national issues pointed out that, 'If there are no good people, you can't have a good nation. And that is why we keep on having such problems'.He explained: 'there is a lot of ignorance in the polity, Christian don't know what their religion teaches them, Muslims don't know what Islam is allabout, that is ignorant. So, we must wake up and educate ourselvesvery well about what Islam is. And Christian too must wake and educatethemselves about what Christianity is.'Ignorant and moral decay are the same problem that cause the decay of our infrastructure in the country, lack of electricity, lack of goodroads, lack of good governance, lack of everything', he said. His words, 'Moral decay in the sense that people know what they are suppose to do because they are educated, either religious leaders, political leaders but they have refuse to do so, instead they turn the other way. Ignorance, people don't know what Islam is.'So, it is important for us to understand who we are. We are Muslims, yes, we are. But do we live our lives as Muslims''Whatever our part is, in whatever you do, not only here, but in allyour meetings, please get cross to us and what role do we play.As leaders we can't do anything without knowing what you want us to do and that is why Islam is so serious about consultation by leaders with those they are leading. Because, if we don't know what problemwe are facing, we cannot proffer solution to such problems.'People have been stereotyping Islam across the world not only inNigeria. We have to continue to educate the people on what Islam is, ifwe don't do that they would not know what Islam is. Because peoplehave a mindset very negative about what Islam is. So it is a duty to all of us, we must continue telling non Muslim about what Islam is'.
