Group Charges African Leaders On Climate Change

AS negotiations in Durban move into extra time, the Africa Progress Panel has called on leaders to use the remaining hours to reach the agreements that Africa and other developing nations so badly need.The Panel outlines three key outcomes that can, and should, still be achieved in Durban. It charged: focus must now be on ensuring that there are clear deadlines ' hence a roadmap must be agreed upon by 2011; Green Climate Fund (GCF) must be made operational by 2013 and that innovations in agriculture must be funded under the Green Climate Fund and the focus must be on adaptation.Executive Director of the Africa Progress Panel, Caroline Kende-Robb says: 'Time is very short, but it is even shorter for Africa, which will heat up more quickly than other parts of the world. Africa is already feeling the effects of climate change and cannot wait any longer for action to be taken. Thisis a question of equity and social justice.The most vulnerable nations, the ones who contribute the least to GH gas emissions, are set to be the biggest losers. We need a clear timetable for delivery on any new agreements. Without that, they are largely meaningless.
