Seth Rollins Is Emerging as a Modern-Day Shawn Michaels

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 13 Feb 2015

To many, the current WWE landscape is beginning to resemble that of 1995. As the stars of yesterday begin to call it a day, a new generation of talent is beginning to redefine the very nature of the product. There are plenty of reasons why the years directly preceding the fabled Attitude Era aren't reflected upon that fondlybut throughout the bleaker periods of WWF's calm before the storm, Shawn Michaels could be relied upon to deliver the goods, both in the ring and on the mic.Starting out alongside Marty Janetty as The Rockers, Michaels vividly expressed his plans to rise to the top of the wrestling world when he sent his tag team partner crashing through a barbershop window back in 1992. On his own, The Heartbreak Kid began to truly flourish as a character.Backed by a reportedly close relationship with Vince McMahon, Michaels was given the opportunity to spend time on commentary and deliver promos to hone his skills. Like all the greats, HBK didn't emerge as a finished producthis development as a performer was ongoing throughout his long career. The introduction of Diesel as a bodyguard only served to accelerate The Showstopper's progression. Given an imposing crony to fall back on, Michaels had more tools with which to draw fans' ire. It was around this time that he demonstrated his progress as a singles performer by challenging for the world title.Michaels had made it to the main event scene. The years that would follow would bring controversy and praise in equal measure for HBKbut, from here on out, Michaels was one of the top wrestlers in the company. If the current status of WWE does indeed mimic the events of 20 years ago, there's little doubt that today's equivalent to Shawn Michaels is Seth Rollins. After his debut as part of The Shield, Seth Rollins betrayed his partners to set out on his own. Buoyed by Triple H, The Architect spent plenty of time addressing the crowd with The Authority, improving greatly as a result.Taking on J&J Security as his underlings, Rollins has quickly become one of the most detestable figures on the WWE roster. His solid ring skills and his ability to rile up a crowd have led to world-title contention and a comfortable transition to headlining pay-per-views.The similarities between Michaels and Rollins are undeniable, but they're not enough to substantiate claims that the current Mr. Money in the Bank's career will match the legendary status of HBK's. They'renot a bad foundation to build from, though.Ability is, of course, the main strength that Michaels and Rollins share. Being able to put on a great match with anyone is a huge benefit to talent attempting to broach the main event picture. The wrestling business has always had a place for workhorses who can bring out the best in their opponents. Some of Kevin Nash's best work was on display when he faced Michaels for the title as Diesel, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Rollins work similar wonders for Roman Reigns in the near future. That isn't a criticism of Reigns, it's just good business to allow talent to cover for one another's weaknesses. That said, neither Michaels nor Rollins became a success simply by making others look good. The pair also share the unbridled desire that's necessary to stand out in a competitive locker room. A personal quest to be the best has spurred both men to surpass the expectations of others.Look at Rollins' comments in last year's Journey to SummerSlam: The Shield documentary, and compare them to the tales of Michaels' ascent to the top of the industry in the '90s. The particulars may differ, but each man was backed by the conviction that they represented the best in the business. The future looks bright for Rollins, but he has a mountain to climb if he wants to replicate the enormous success of Michaels. Fortunately, there's little to suggest that a challenge of that scale would discourage Rollins from establishing a legend all his own.
