Govt promises centres as Eket reclaims Mobil crown

The Federal Government has said that it will set up sports development centres across the country and Eket stands a good chance of being considered. It is thanks to the AKS/NNPC/MPN Secondary Schools Athletics Championship whose eleventh edition was completed on Saturday in Eket, Akwa Ibom State.At the closing ceremony of the event, the Deputy Director Sports Federations and Elite Athletes Department, Mr Alhassan Yakmut who represented the minister of sports commended the initiative of Mobil Producing for sponsoring the schools athletics championship for the past eleven years.He said, "There should be an athletics academy in Eket where products of the athletics championship can be further developed to stardom. This place could be considered as development centre." For the games, Eket Sports Zone reclaimed the trophy it lost last year to Ikot Ekpene when it romped to an unassailable lead with 12 gold, seven silver and four bronze medals.Ikot Ekpene Zone came second with four gold, seven silver and six bronze medals, while Uyo Zone had four gold, three silver and four bronze medals.And for the first time in the history of the competition, a zone ended the championship without any medal and that was Etinan Zone. Oron Zone did slightly better with one silver and four bronze medals.
