Nigeria needs more secure borders ' Minister

Published by Punch on Mon, 12 Dec 2011

The Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (retd.), has said the nation needs to secure its borders more than ever before. The minister said this in an interview with journalists at Ipoti-Ekiti in Ijero Local Government Area on Saturday after he had participated in the rerun in the area.Olubolade said terrorism was alien to Nigeria and that the police were also working to curb the activities of terrorist groups in the country. He urged Nigerians to always volunteer useful information to the police and other security agencies to assist them in dealing with the situation.According to him, security agencies will not achieve much if they just move round the country without information on specific people. The minister said the police were also working to procure new technology to assist them to effectively tackle insecurity. He said the new technology would assist them to provide adequate security for Nigerians. He added that the devices were necessary since terrorists also used technology to perpetrate their heinous crimes. He said, "I will not say that we have done marvelously well on the Boko Haram. This is because terrorism is a new dimension to insecurity in Nigeria."Nigerians like to import foreign things. It is alien to Nigeria. Because it is new, we cannot say we are on top of it yet."However, the current security situation has given us the opportunity to reappraise our security apparatus and it is teaching us a new way to approach it. It has also shown us that we should be our brothers keepers. It has also taught us that we should give information to the police because without information, even the best trained police force or security outfit cannot function well."We have to secure all our borders more than before to prevent unscrupulous persons from entering the country."He stressed that security agencies would work hard to deal with enemies within, saying Nigerians must rally behind the security agencies to stop Boko Haram from further wreaking havoc on Nigeria.
