Published by Punch on Mon, 12 Dec 2011

The Ekiti State Government may reduce the personal income taxes deducted from the salaries of its workers. The Head of Service in the state, Mr. Bunmi Famosaya, said this in Ado-Ekiti on Friday at a press conference to herald the 2011 Civil ServiceWeek. This, he said, was based on complaints from some of the workers.Famosaya said, We have written to Mr. Governor to waive certain percentage of tax paid by the workers. I am sure that he will approve the waiver. The HOS added that the governor had approved the payment of 20 per cent of basic salary to all categories of workers as Christmas bonus.According to him, the state government has paid N2,267,166,214.73 to retired public servants in the state as pensions and gratuities.Famosaya explained that the money was paid in the last one year, adding that it was part of the governments effort to motivate those in service to put in their best.He said N1,267,166,214.73 was paid to 5,510 retirees as pensions while the sum of N1,000,000,000.00 was disbursed to 553 beneficiaries as their gratuities. The HOS said, I wish to point out that the state government has restored the confidence of retired senior citizens in respect of payment of pension and gratuity. Retired public servants can now smile all the way to the bank within 60 days of retirement to collect their pensions and gratuities.
