ICAN tasks new members on accountability

THE President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Professor Francis Ojaide, has charged graduates of the Accounting Technicians' Scheme (ATS) to strive to protect and uphold the aims and objectives of the association and the institute as well as the accounting profession.Speaking at the 35th induction ceremony for the newly qualified members of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), Ojaide said: 'As an accounting technicians, you must strive to perform your duties in accordance with acceptable technical standards irrespective of the sector of the economy in which you are employed. The accounting technician is trained to function effectively in both the public and private sectors of the economy.'He advised the ATS graduates who have automatically become qualified members of the AAT of ICAN not to collude with anyone to cheat or defraud their employers.'Monies and other resources entrusted to your care must be expended only for the purposes intended and accountably.'You must not tamper with your employers' monies, temporarily borrow them or use the cash entrusted to your care to settle claims due to you from your employer no matter how legitimate.'He noted that it was only by observing these norms that they could contribute to the sustenance of the leadership role of chartered accountants in corporate governance in public and private sectors of the nation.Ojaide noted that in order to improve the employment prospects of the AAT holders, the institute had embarked on visitations to potential employers so that the right level of awareness was created not only about the qualification but also about the vast potentials of its holders.
