Afe Babalola faults 1999 Constitution Amendment

A SENIOR Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Aare Afe Babalola, has picked holes in the recent Federal Government proposed amendment to the 1999 Constitution, saying such approach is certainly not the solution to Nigeria's multi-dimensional problems.Babalola, who is of the opinion that the country is presently at a crossroad in terms of development, especially 51 years after it attained independence, expressed the hope that 'we can survive and surmount the seemingly impossible problems if we quickly convene a National Constitutional Conference.'Should the government accept his plea , Babalola said such a forum would afford Nigerians 'the opportunity of sitting down together and fashion out an acceptable people's Constitution to replace the expensive Military Presidential Constitution which has made politics the only lucrative business and which has discouraged individual earnings through personal initiative and sweat'.
