Modern policing is intelligence-driven ' CP

The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, Mr. Solomon Arase, has said modern policing is intelligence-driven and not brute force.He said police education should be based on enhancement of police officers intellectual profile through human capacity training and development programmes.Arase said this in Uyo on Monday at a workshop on Contemporary Policing and Crime Challenges in Akwa Ibom State, organised by the the command in collaboration with CLEEN Foundation, Lagos.He said, Modern policing is intelligence-driven. This is inevitably so because of the combined factors of globalisation, rapidly advancing technology, increasingly complex dynamics of crime, accountability factors, and the demands for civil and legal compliance in the execution of police functions.Arase, who warned that the indiscriminate violation of citizens rights by policemen would no longer be tolerated, said police officers were expected to operate within the ambit of the law and with precise intellectual and professional competence.He explained that the workshop was designed to enhance the ability of field officers, especially Divisional Police Officers across the 36 divisions in the state to understand the challenges of contemporary policing.The CP added that the workshop would also develop the intellectual capacity of policemen to manage crimes peculiar to their jurisdictions.He said he would partner the Human Rights Unit of the Commonwealth Office, United Kingdom, for technical support and specialised training on a number of policing-related fields.The fields, he said, include election security management, human rights, gender-related violence, child rights, victims support, domestic violence and negotiation skills in management of kidnapping cases.
