Lemo to address e-payment operators on 'Cash-Lite' at CeBIH seminar

Deputy Governor,Central Bank ofNigeria, (CBN), Operations, Mr Tunde Lemo, will address electronic payment operators on the preparation for the commencement of the 'Cash-Lite' Nigeria policy at a one-day seminar organised by the Committee of e-Banking Industry Heads (CeBIH).The seminar is aimed at evaluating the level of preparedness for the take off of the pilot scheme scheduled for January 1, 2012, in Lagos. It is also designed to facilitate a harmonious working relationship between the CeBIH, regulators and critical stakeholders such as non-banking payment service providers and the media to ensure the successful implementation of the policy.The seminar will feature a keynote address by Mr Tunde Lemo and presentations by Musa Jimoh, Deputy Director, Banking and Payment Systems, CBN; Mr Niyi Ajao, Acting Managing Director/Chief Executive, Nigeria Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), Ms. Eyitope St. Mathew-Daniel, Head, Shared Services, CBN.Jimoh will speak on 'Overview of Regulatory and Policy Framework for Retail Payments Transformation in Nigeria, while Ajao will speak on'New Retail Payments Landscape: The role of National Central Switch'. Ms. Eyitope St. Mathew-Daniel is scheduled speak on 'Cash-Lite Lagos: An Assessment of our State of Readiness.'The seminar, which is billed to hold on December 15 at the Oriental Hotel, will be attended by the major stakeholders in the ePayment Industry, including financial and information technology journalists and media executives.Established July 2009, CeBIH comprises all heads of e-business/e-channels and cards services of all the 23 banks in Nigeria. The primary objective of the Committee is to promote electronic banking services in line with global best practices and serve as a forum for sharing ideas and experiences by the e-banking industry Heads.Chuma Ezirim, Chairman of CeBIH, stated that 'The overall objective of the seminar is to ensure consensus of stakeholders on the level of preparedness for the commencement of the Cashless Nigeria Policy so that the desired objective which is to de-emphasise the use of cash for payments is achieved''.
