Robbery: Banks shut doors against customers in Akure

For the third dayrunning, commercial banks in Ondo State did not open for transactions because of the incessant armed robbery attacks in the state, just as the state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has pledged to invest more in security by installing Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras for community surveillance.All the commercial banks in Akure and other parts of the state were not operational on Monday, as hundreds of customers returned home disappointed.Some of the banks had, since last Thursday, been locking their gates against their customers, following another attack on the Idanre branch of a first generation bank.However, the state governor, at a meeting with security agencies and officials of banks operating in the state, assured them and the entire people of the state of the safety of life and property, as the government was committed to the peaceful co-existence of the people.Speaking through the Commissioner for Finance, Chief Yele Ogundipe, the governor said it was a step forward in its fight against armed banditry after the acquisition of five new Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to boost the internal security network, especially during the Yuletide.Apart from this, he said plans were ongoing to purchase more Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) as part of measures aimed at beefing security in the state.The New Covenant Church, Olomi Centre, Ibadan, will hold its 2011 Youth Week between Monday, December 12 and Sunday, December 18, 2011 at the church auditorium. The event, which started on Monday, will continue today, with a Bible study by 5.30p.m, while there will be a publicity of oncoming events on Wednesday, December 14, between 5p.m and 7p.m. There will be a drama and praise night on Thursday, December 15, from 9:00p.m. till dawn, while a picnic at the Conference Centre, Basorun, will follow on Saturday. On Sunday, December 18, youths will hold a special thanksgiving service at the church auditorium for the success of the week. The hosts for the events are Reverend Shittu Adedeji; the church's National Overseer, Reverend Oyelade and Reverend (Dr) Paul Jinadu, the General Overseer.
