Hospitals to be sanctioned for rejecting accident victims

Published by Tribune on Tue, 13 Dec 2011

The Federal RoadSafety Commission (FRSC) says appropriate measures have been put in place to sanction any hospital that refuses to receive accidents victims.Mr Abubarkar Ahmed, the FRSC Unit Commander, made the announcement recently in Abuja at a seminar on 'Advocacy For Road Safety In A Developing Society,' organised by Save Accident Victims Association of Nigeria (SAVAN).'Any hospital that rejects accident victims will be punished. The situation is better now, compared to what it used to be. We now have call centres across the country, so that any time there is accident, people can always call on the FRSC.'Ahmed attributed most of the crashes that occurred on the roads to inadequate knowledge of road signs.'Most of the time, we blame accidents on dangerous driving and drunkenness, but little attention is placed on road signs. Most of the time, the road signs are there, but do not attract attention, because we don't place emphasis on them.'He stressed that a good knowledge of road signs was compulsory, and appealed to both the commuters and motorists to always ensure that due recognition was given to them.Ahmed warned drivers, especially in the rural areas to desist from overloading, which he identified as one of the causes of road accidents.Mr Abdullahi Yahaya, the Coordinator of SAVAN, urged FRSC to be alive to its responsibility by punishing those using serene indiscriminately.'Most of our security agencies abuse the use of serene on our roads and appropriate measures must be taken to curb the menace.'Mr Peter Adegbe, an official of NDLEA, advised the public against the use of drugs that were without prescription, 'which can have negative effects on the way they drive.
