Kwara to utilise corps members for rural development

Published by Tribune on Tue, 13 Dec 2011

Skills and expertise of membersof the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will be utilised by the Kwara State government in the implementation and enhancement of development services in both the rural and urban areas of the state and to spread democracy dividends across the nooks and crannies of the state.Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2011 Batch 'C' three-week orientation course at the NYSC permanent orientation camp, Yikpata, in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State on Tuesday, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, said that his administration had embarked on various programmes which covered sectors as roads, youth employment, education, health and other social services, for the benefit of the people. The governor, who said that a majority of the corps members would be posted to the rural areas for their primary assignments, according to the NYSC posting policy, charged them to selflessly and diligently serve and contribute towards the socio-economic development of the various host communities as pivots of social change.'You must strive to make remarkable impact where you are posted through your community development service, thereby making the places better than you met them', the governor said, adding that government on its part would continue to create an enabling environment through the board, for the corps members to maximise their potentials for self realisation. The governor also charged the corps members to reflect on the lectures and trainings they had received on self-employment and entrepreneural skills for the purpose of becoming employers of labour and job creators instead of being job seekers. He also urged them to be humble, polite and diligent in the discharge of their duties throughout the one-year of selfless service, saying, 'As you leave for your respective places of primary assignment, the NYSC by the implication of its objectives, calls for maximum discipline, dedication and loyalty'.Also speaking, the state coordinator of the scheme in Kwara State, Ezinne Ngozi Ezekwe, said the NYSC management had resolved to reinvigorate the community development service programme and charged the corps members to get involved in more creative, challenging and concrete development projects such as the current Federal goverment campaigns on the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, family and Community Life Education (FACOLE), YouWin Entrepreneurial Project, campaigns against the spread of HIV/AIDS, and other programmes espoused by the scheme for the benefit of humanity.
