Jonathan: Adeniyi's book on Yar'adua reminds of Civil War

Published by Daily Trust on Tue, 13 Dec 2011

President Goodluck Jonathan said the accounts of the intrigues behind former President Umaru Musa Yar'adua's illness and death by Yar'adua's former spokesman, Olusegun Adeniyi, reminded him of the accounts of the Civil War.He stated this yesterday while receiving the book titled: 'Power, Politics and Death' written by Adeniyi at the State House, Abuja.'I believe this book will attract a lot of interest. I believe journalists will want to read it quickly. It makes me to remember the accounts of the civil war. The first account that came out was 'My command' written by Obasanjo.'The second came out and Ojukwu now published his own account, 'Because I was involved.' I know that when people read this book, maybe some of the key actors will also come out with their accounts because they were involved. Thank you for allowing Nigerians to the details of what transpired.'I quite agree with you that the circumstances of the late president's death reduced a number of things that were done to footnotes and his death then became the main issue. We are all mortals, we must all die but the contributions we make either in a day or a week, a year or a decade are critical, more critical than our death. We thank you for putting this together.'Jonathan, who noted the author's commitment to documenting the Yar'adua/Jonathan presidency, thanked him for the honour of letting him have the book in advance of its public presentation.Adeniyi said 'I decided to write a book on Yar'Adua Presidency because the narrative of Yar'Adua has been reduced to his illness and death. I believe that there is more to Yar'adua Presidency of which you were an integral part than his illness and death.'There were a couple of things that were done and I feel I should document them. Even the narrative on his illness and death because of the politics involved, I don't believe the accounts have been accurate. I decided to put the record straight as somebody who witnessed some of the drama. That is what I tried to do in the book.'Adeniyi acknowledged Jonathan's financial support towards his stay in Harvard, saying 'I want Nigerians to know that without your support, it would have been difficult for me to go to Harvard.'He said it was while in Harvard that he decided to write a book on Yar'adua Presidency.
