24-year-old arraigned for raping pupil

The police on Tuesday arraigned a 24-year-old man, Akin Fatunwase, before an Osogbo Senior Magistrates Court for allegedly raping a 17-year-old secondary school pupil, News Agency of Nigeria reports.Police prosecutor Joshua Oladoye told the court that the accused, on December 8 at about 9a.m., laid an ambush for the victim on a footpath leading to Ataoja School of Science, Osogbo.He gripped her from behind and forcefully had carnal knowledge of the pupil but her cries for help attracted people in the area who came to the scene and rescued her, he said.Oladoye said the good Samaritans apprehended Fatunwase and handed him over to the police.He said the offence contravened Section 357 of the Criminal Code 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun 2003 and was punishable under Section 358 of the same law.The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.His counsel, Mrs. Nnenna Ugwu, urged the court to grant him bail on most liberal terms.Senior Magistrate Olusola Aluko granted him person bail in the sum of N50,000 and one surety in like sum.She said the surety should swear to an affidavit of means and provide three years tax clearance certificate and two clear passport photographs.The case was adjourned to December 21 for hearing.
