Yuletide: FRSC promises accident-free celebrations

As the yuletideapproaches,the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has promised to ensure accident-free celebrations.This was disclosed on by the Ogere Unit Commander of the FRSC, Saddiq Adbul-Rahman, at the ember month campaign of the unit in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, saying that unit would be pro-active towards achieving the objective of an accident-free Christmas and New Year Celebrations, while urging all road users to be more safety cautious.The programme, held over the weekend had representatives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Amalgamated Commercial Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), The Nigeria Police Force, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) and other stakeholders in attendance.He disclosed that the Unit was working towards ensuring 50 per cent road accidents reduction by 2020, according to the recommendation of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).'One of the functions of FRSC is to educate road users. During festivals like this, we ensure that people leave where they are and get to where they are going safely. We, safety managers have to be pro-active and one of such is this campaign.'There used to be a lot of activities and celebrations during this period. This is why FRSC now makes it a statutory duty that whenever we enter ember months; we want to record zero crash on our roads.'Adbul-Rahman warned drivers of commercial vehicles to desist from taking alcoholic drinks before embarking on any journey, adding that the campaign would be on till 30th January, 2012.Alhaji Sanni Karaja, who spoke on behalf of NURTW members, commended the efforts of the unit for coming to the aid of road users in cases of emergencies.He opined that road accidents would be reduced if drivers were more careful and patient while on thehighways.
