NCS pledges to use technology to stop terrorism

THE Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has offered to be given the chance to use modern day technology to unravel and thereafter stop the spate of bombing in the country.The professional association, which met with the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Communications Society, Eugene Juwah in Abuja recently, regretted that the situation was threatening the to make life unsafe for Nigerians.President of the Society, Demola Aladekomo, who led top professional members of the NCS to the Commission, stressed: 'We have among or members professionals whose input into the way and manner intelligence is gathered with the use of IT tools could help isolate potential threats to lives and properties. The major technology issues and implementation of identity management, anti-money laundering and terror funding monitoring systems are areas our Society can assist government. We recall the last National Council of State calling for the use of technology to combat terrorism.'We assure you that at Nigerian Computer Society, our door is perpetually opened for your invitation. For long, we had waited for someone to partner with, to share, develop and implement our national development programmes with. Now that government has placed you in this position at this critical juncture of our country, we extend our hand of fellowship to work with you towards including the above briefly discussed issues of terrorism and employment into a well articulated and implementable ICT policy plan for our dear country, Nigeria.'Meanwhile, in Lagos, in preparation for the December 16 NCS NITMA award, a statement from NCS informed that it has shortlisted five personalities for its IT personality of year award and they includes; Mr. Austin Okere, GMD, Computer Warehouse Group, Ms Funke Opeke, MD/CEO MainOne Cable Company, Mr. John Tani Obaro, MD/CEO, SystemSpecs Limited, Mr. Mitchell Elegbe, MD/CEO, Interswitch Limited and Chief Leo Stan Ekeh, Chairman/CEO Zinox Technologies Limited.To ensure multi-stakeholder representation, NCS stated that a committee consisting of professional members of NCS, representatives of interest groups such as the Information Technology Industry Association of Nigeria (ITAN), Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON), representative of the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) and representative of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) was responsible for selecting and short-listing these finalists.
