AFAN commends FG on agric incentives

Chairman, Enugu State chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Alfred Eneh, has praised President Goodluck Jonathan for the budgetary allocation to the agricultural sector.Eneh told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Nsukka that with effective implementation, the agricultural sector would be boosted."With zero import duty on agricultural equipment and inputs, many importers will be interested in importing agriculture facilities and this will help strengthen agricultural activities," he said.He described the ongoing census of farmers in the country by Federal Ministry of Agriculture as a welcome development, adding that it would enable government to distinguish genuine farmers from fake ones."With this farmers census, government will distinguish between the authentic farmers and the political farmers. Our problem in this country is that loans meant for farmers are hijacked by political farmers," Eneh said.The chairman, however, urged the government to ensure that budgetary allocation for agriculture was fully utilised, stressing that most times, the government made good policies but failed to implement them effectively."All the good intentions for the agriculture sector in the 2012 budget, if well implemented, will take the sector to the next level; we cannot achieve food security in this country if agriculture is not given the required attention," the chairman stated.
