Kanu for sale!

Published by Tribune on Thu, 15 Dec 2011

FORMER Super Eagles skipper Nwankwo Kanu is on his way out of Portsmouth FC of England as the club strives to find a way out of its financial crisis.Portmouth, 2008 English FA Cup winner had since that same year been faced with cash problem, a development that denied the club participation in the EUROPA Cup.Although the club has been struggling to move on, recent happenings around the team suggested that things are not getting better, leaving the club with no other option than to look for a leeway to the crisis. To put the situation under control, Pompey's new manager, Michael Appleton is weighing the option of selling some of his key players in January to secure financial breakthrough as well as raise funds to rebuild the team.Among the players listed for sale is Kanu, whose single strike in the final match against Cadiff earned the club the FA Cup title.Others are Hermann Hreidarsson, Tal Ben Haaim and Zimbabwean Benjani Mwariwari.Appleton has seven points from his last three games so far but with Pompey's parent company in administration, he must raise his own funds to bring in new talents, hence his plan to sell Kanu and others.Kanu joined Portmouth as a free agent following his departure from West Brom, and he signed for Portsmouth on a one-year deal shortly before the start of the 2006'07 season. He made his debut for Portsmouth as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers on 19 August 2006, the opening day of the 2006'2007 Premier League season. scoring twice and missing a penalty.Though Kanu led the top scorers chart early in the season, he had a goal drought for the rest of the season, but still finished as the top goalscorer for Portsmouth, with 12 goals.
