Nigeria/Caribbean School Games underway

THE Nigerian Academicals Sports Committee (NASCOM) has entered into agreement with the Federal Ministry of Culture and National Orientation for the hosting of the inaugural Nigeria/Caribbean School Sports competition.According to NASCOM Chairman, Segun Odegbami, who revealed this after the committee's meeting with members of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports on Monday in Abuja, the Games, being initiated by the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Edem Duke, will help in the exchange of cultures between Nigerian students and their Caribbean counterparts.He said the Games would hold in the summer of 2012, adding that it is part of the programmes of the committee to towards the revival of academicals sports in the country. He said: 'At the instance of the Minister of Culture and Tourism, sports tourism will be promoted through the numerous programmes of NASCOM.'The Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation has captured the vision and has already given NASCOM the responsibility to create a Caribbean/Nigeria Games for students of the Caribbean and Nigeria.I can reveal to you that the first Games between the two communities will take place in the summer of 2012.'The Games shall include not only sports but will promote culture and the arts.Friendship will be cultivated between the two communities, which will facilitate the promotion of exchange programmes between them. This is tourism influencing business and industry between the Caribbean Islands and Nigeria.'He further revealed that in the new year, NASCOM would champion the revival of the Nigeria/Ghana Academicals competition and look for ways to extend it to include some neighboring West African countries.
