Van De Vyver wins best expatriatetitle, as Union Assurance Family Tennis ends

HEAD of the CNBC in West Africa, Federic Van De Vyver, last weekend emerged the best expatriate tennis player in Nigeria by beating finance consultant, Nick Chambers, in straight sets of 6-4,6-2 inthe men's singles final.The expatriate championshipwasa part of the Union Assurance Family Tennis fiesta that featured familyevents and an open club doubles championship. Van De Vyver, who won the inaugural event at Golden Tulip Festac Hotel last year, had toovercome a highly motivated but somewhat erratic opponent withgood tactical and consistent shot placement.The club doubles event was won by Walter Eze and Godwin Kienka,the Ikoyi Club doubles champions, who beat the hard serving and hard hitting Bimbo Okubena and Ishmael Nwokocha in a tight 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 three-setter. Kienka also paired wife, Rita, to win the Husband/Wife trophy, beating the Bulgarian pair of Stojan Satej 9-7 (pro set). The Amaechi Ndilis placed third.The finals on Sunday attracted a large crowd of weekend tennis players, whoexpressed surprise at the standard of club tennis in Nigeria. Union Assurance Managing Director, Godwin Odah, said: 'The standard of the expatriate men's finals was so highwe thought for a moment we were watching the finals of the Lagos Governor's Cup satellite event.'This is a good motivation for us to continue to sponsor the event andmake it one that will catch the attention of the whole country.'Director of the International Tennis Academy, which organises the tourney, Godwin Kienka, said: 'I have no doubt that we have found the best players in every category and any one who feels otherwise can come next year and challenge for the titles.
