Published by Guardian on Thu, 15 Dec 2011

RISING cases of maternal mortality rate in the country has been attributed to haemorrhage which could occur during and after child delivery, according tothe Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, Prof. Temitope Alonge.Alonge who was summoned by the Oyo State lawmakers to brief members on the causes of infant and maternal mortality in the state, said infections that occurred during labour and delivery could cause death. .He stated further that immunisation team at times causes a lot of dangers, adding that with the procurement of solar powered deep freezer, the local government could sensitise the people on the importance of vaccines. .Alonge stated that the freezer could be used in storing vaccines used in primary health centers with or without power. He noted that there was need for all the local governments in the state to intensify efforts in the immunisation exercise, stressing that the state Ministry of Health would partner teaching hospitals in the state to embark on consultancy services so as to stem mortality level.'There is the need to intensify immunisation exercise in various local governments in the state by procuring solar powered deep freezer. This can be used in storing our vaccines used in primary health centers,' he said. Also speaking, Dr. Adebola Robert, a gynaecologist who accompanied the CMD affirmed that abortion, obstruction and ecclesia could result to hypertension and cause death during child delivery. .He added that the number of death of abortion cases was similar to malaria every year. .'Women are not dying because of diseases we can't treat, they are dying because society are yet to make decisions that their lives are worth saving,' he stated.Robert, however, urged the state government to equip primary health centres and basic emergency units in the state, which he described as next to health care.'If there are severe cases like renal failure or cardiac failure they should send them to UCH for urgent treatment,' he concluded.
