College organises cooking competition for polytechnic students

IN a bid to develop interests among young Nigerians for the hospitality industry as well improve their talents, the Wavecrest College of Hospitality Management, Surulere has organised a cooking competition for polytechnic students in the country.The schools include Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, Orisun School of Catering, Ibadan, Oyo State, Iroto School of Hospitality, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State and Wavecrest College of Hospitality, Surulere, Lagos.Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Provost and Organisers of the competition, Ms. Rosana Forsuelo, who welcomed the contestants, wished them the best as they went about putting all they had learnt to practical use.The Senior Lecturer of the school, Ms. Lauretta Togonu-Bickersteth, who spoke on 'Young Chefs On Parade' said, 'this event is aimed at promoting the hospitality and tourism career, improving the perception of the industry in Nigeria and to showcase the role of the service industry in the society at large.'She added, 'we hope to make this event an annual one to reach out and bring together stakeholders to contribute to training and the education of young Nigerians through this career.'The contest, which was divided into five categories, includes Cake Decoration, On The Spot Table Setting For Four With 'London Olympic 2012,' Theme Centrepiece: On The Spot Table Skirting with Fruit Carving Centrepiece; Cocktail Mixing (Alcoholic & Non Alcoholic); and Market Basket Continental.For cake decoration, 1st prize was N400, 000 worth of goods including state-of-the-art culinary utensils and equipment; 2nd prize, N300, 000 worth of goods, while 3rd prize was N200, 000 worth of goods. On the spot table setting, 1st prize was N300, 000 worth of goods; 2nd prize, N250, 000 worth of goods, and 3rd prize, N200, 000 worth of goods. Similarly, prizes for the table-skirting category were the same as those for table setting.Others are prizes for Cocktail Mixing (both for Alcoholic and Non Alcoholic drinks separately): 1st prize was N75, 000 worth of goods, 2nd prize, N50, 000 worth of goods and 3rd prize of N30, 000 worth of goods.In the final category of Culinary Market Basket Continental, 1st prize was N300, 000 worth of goods, 2nd Prize, N200, 000 worth of goods while 3rd prize was N150,000 worth of goods.
