Kaduna Utd finances under probe

Published by Punch on Fri, 16 Dec 2011

Kaduna State Government has commenced investigation into the N257m expenditure of the Nigeria Premier League club Kaduna United, following the clubs failure to pay its players and officials in the past nine months.A government official told MTNFootball.com that an investigative panel led by sports commissioner Nazifi Mohammed is to find out how the club spent over N182m to feature in the last CAF Confederation Cup competition and another N75m to take part in the domestic league.Further checks showed that Kaduna United expended a total of N42m for its matches home and away against Asec Mimosas of Cote dIvoire in the Confederation Cup.The club equally spent N36m to take on Chadian club Foullah Edifice home and away in the second round of the Confederation Cup.It also spent N26m to host Interclube of Angola in Kaduna and another N13m when they fell 1-0 at home to Tunisias Club Africain.Despite the huge investment, the state-owned club failed to go past the group phase of the continental competition. It is puzzling that a team that gets over N30m a quarter from government should now be in such a big financial mess, the official said. The player are yet to resume training for the new season because of the poor finances, forcing the bulk of the squad to try their luck at other clubs. The officials were shocked to learn that a N15m signing-on fee promised Belgian coach Maurice Cooreman to stay with the club at the beginning of last season was yet to be paid.Cooreman is also owed N9m, being his unpaid salaries for nine months. The highest paid players at the club earn N160,000 a monthly after signing-on fees were abolished, meaning that the players will expect to be paid over a million naira each before the new season starts on January 7.
