Lagos residents commend govt over Fadeyi pedestrian bridge rehabilitation

Published by Tribune on Fri, 16 Dec 2011

Residents of Fadeyi, Lagos, have commended the staate government for rehabilitating the pedestriana bridge in the area,ac and appealed to the people to always use it when crossing the expressway. Some of the residents said that the bridge had been a death trap, forcing many people to take the risk of crossing the expressway on foot.It was learnt that the state government commenced the rehabilitation of the bridge in November and it was ready for use in the first week of the December.A civil servant, Mr Ibrahim Salami, commended the state government for its quick intervention in the rehabilitation of the bridge and appealed to residents to stop dashing across the 10-lane highway.Mrs Nkem Onyebuchi, a petty trader at the foot of the bridge, said that many people had been knocked down, some killed, while crossing the express road before the rehabilitation of the bridge.'One day, a young woman had succeeded in crossing three lanes, but she was knocked down by an okada while crossing the fourth lane, and an oncoming vehicle crushed her to death.'Since I witnessed that accident, instead of crossing the expressway, I rather take a bus to Jibowu Junction and take another bus going to Palm Groove to alight at my destination safely. It is better to be late than be the late', she said.It was also reported that some pedestrians who did not use the footbridge claimed that they were not aware it had been repaired.Until its recent rehabilitation, the pedestrian bridge at Fadeyi had become wobbly and rusty that people avoided using it.
