Uduaghan urges NURTW to promote peace

Published by Tribune on Fri, 16 Dec 2011

Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State has urged members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to conduct their affairs in a responsible and peaceful manner in the state. He gave the charge in Asaba when members of the union, led by its state chairman, Chief Ifeanyi Obi, paid him a courtesy call recently.Uduaghan, however, expressed the government's unhappiness with the image of most of the union's members at different motor parks across the state.``You should organise yourselves in a way that the members' welfare becomes paramount to the union, instead of becoming tools for conflicts in the hands of politicians.``We are aware of the conflict between the union members at Agbor but I want to assure you that that all those who are law-abiding will get protection of the state,'' he said. However, Uduaghan pledged that additional buses would be provided for the NURTW if its members could conduct themselves in a peaceful manner.``Transportation is important for the actualisation of our development agenda; if you can manage the buses we gave you earlier well; then, you will have more.``As you know, we have acquired about 600 buses to boost transportation in the state and our target is 1,000 buses before leaving office.``And now, our roads had been given a facelift, all in a bid to promote transportation in the state," Uduaghan said.Earlier, Obi had appealed to the governor to intervene in the crisis affecting the union at Agbor. He underscored the belief of the union's leadership in peaceful resolution of disputes, adding that such conviction propelled it to seek the governor's intervention in the crisis rocking the union at Agbor.
