Abia assures on availability of fuel during Xmas

Published by Guardian on Fri, 16 Dec 2011

AN assurance has come from the Abia State Commissioner for Petroleum, Akujuobi Nkoro, that there would be adequate supply of petroleum products in the state throughout the Christmas and New Year festivities. Speaking on the lingering hike in the price of the product, which was consequent upon the strike embarked on by tanker drivers following their reported clash with security agencies, Nkoro said the crisis was being resolved.Nkoro said the state government had replacedthe destroyedtyres of the affected vehicles, 'but thattrouble began again when the drivers alleged that the security agencies went to a mechanic shop to puncture some tyres'.Presently, petrol and kerosine sell for N75 and N140 per litre in the state. The commissioner said the problem created by the strike forced the prices of petroleum products to increase from N65 to N70 and N75 per litre, adding that the price would soon come down'.Nkoro assured that there would be petroleum products in the state at the normal prices, 'except when the Federal Government decides toremove fuel subsidy, but before then, the prices will always be the same'.He, however, pointed out that marketers and the NNPC have been trading words over going to Lagos to source for petroleum products, 'which we believe is making the prices to still be high, but I can tell you we are on top of the situation'.On the Aba depot, Nkoro said it would start pumping products for the marketers before the end of the first quarters of next year, stressing that NNPC engineers had finished the repair on the damaged pipeline.
