Who will save the common man

Published by Nigerian Compass on Fri, 16 Dec 2011

I wrote this piece as a Nigerian who carries a heavy heart. I wish I didn't need to write this, I wish even if things are not working, we will see hands that are moving. I wrote because innocent citizens are going to a state of hopelessness and helplessness. Who will save the common man. It is not only that there is crisis in Nigeria, the country itself is 'crisis'. Presently, we are heading for tragedy and nobody (especially people in power) seem to be seeing the ship heading for the deadly Iceberg; the accident might be fatal than that of Titanic. Every one is pretending that all is well and most especially our President, is acting as if leadership is a place of jamboree. How are the mighty fallen' Where did we get it all wrong' I grew up in a country where we have had to endure with lack but the lack is not the state of insecurity we currently face in Nigeria. I spoke with a police officer who stated (in his own estimation) that over 600 policemen had been killed between when this present government came to power and now (May ' December 2011). He equally stated that over 100 banks have been successfully robbed within this period. Is it not laughable that it is the same time that the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, was given a national award'Weapons of war are not seen in war torn countries only anymore but even on the streets of Nigeria. Robbers, militias, etc, freely carry weapons that are meant for war situation around town and there is practically no one to challenge them. How can our leaders look on while strong explosives, rocket launchers, sub machine guns, etc, are displayed all round as if they are gifts from Santa Clause' How sure are we that soon we will not be seeing intercontinental ballistic missiles and various nuclear weapons on the streets of Nigeria' There are series of attacks in all parts of the country. International offices, homes, banks, viewing centres, markets, etc, are being blown away every single day while the helpless citizens can only watch as their lovely ones are violently killed. Who will come to our rescue'It is very unimaginable that our president will continually blame the saboteurs for the present state of the country. My question is: What is so special about him that the act of sabotage that were curtailed under former presidents have now become so overwhelming for the first 'Ph.D' President in Nigeria' I remember growing up in a house that had no fence, no burglary proof on our doors and windows and yet, we can close our eyes and sleep well. Banks and companies spend so much on security doors and gadgets yet they work in perpetual fear. I weep many times when I read GEJ's comment on Facebook because most of them do not even address those things that are giving Nigerians sleepless nights. Road accidents are on the increase, terrorist/Boko Haram attacks, bank robberies, high cost of living, etc, are killing hundreds daily in Nigeria. How many people will be sacrificed before we get a 'Saviour''These are parts of the reasons why I didn't support GEJ's candidacy in the first place because he does not have the will and the capacity to lead a country with so much diversity like Nigeria. Having PhD or being nice (as some of his apologists put it) is not enough to tackle the socio-economic problems we face in Nigeria. When a president declares that he knows those who are behind Boko Haram and yet, he cannot do anything, is tantamount to saying he has surrendered to the group. Who then can we turn to for help in Nigeria when the custodian of power is powerless' Who will save you and I' Who will save our land from an impending collapse' I weep...
