Ekiti plans investments for twins, triplets

Published by Punch on Sat, 17 Dec 2011

Wife of the Ekiti Governor, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi, has said the state is planning to set up various investments for twins, triplets and quadruplets born there.Fayemi said this in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday while disbursing money, food stuff and some other products to 169 beneficiaries of the Multiple Birth Trust Fund in the state. At the event, organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Gender Empowerment, mothers of twins were given the N25,000, while those who gave birth to triplets got N30,000 each. She said the investments would alleviate the financial hardship usually faced by the families, who were blessed with multiple births.According to her, many families in this situation always have difficulties in raising the children because of poverty. She warned against child abandonment, saying the Gender Based Violence Prohibition Law recently passed in the state had penalties for child abandonment. She said some fathers, who were blessed with multiple births, used to run away, but with the establishment of the MBTF, such would be history. She said, Instead of giving such families the usual blankets and cash gifts, I wanted something more sustainable, something which would be ongoing. That was why I advocated the establishment of Multiple Birth Trust Fund, which is located within the Ministry of Women Affairs. It provides financial and productmaterial s support for the families having multiple births based on needs. For those who have triplets and quadruplets and above, we are going to be looking at how we can set up an investment fund for the children so that as they grow older, there would be less burden on the family. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Gender Empowerment, Mrs. Fola Richie-Adewusi, expressed gratitude to Fayemi, who she described as a true mother.
