CAF picks final 5 for Glo CAF Award 'Okocha, Musa still in honours race

Published by Tribune on Sat, 17 Dec 2011

THE Confederation of African Football (CAF) yesterday announced the names of the final five players in the run for the 2011 African Player of the Years award. They are Cameroun's Samuel Eto'o Fils, Ivory Coast's Yaya Toure, Ghana's Andre Dede Ayew, Senegal's Moussa Sow and Mali's Seydou Keita. After votes were counted from chief coaches of Football Associations and Federations affiliated to CAF, Didier Drogba, Gervinho (Ivory Coast), Kevin-Prince Boateng, Asamoah Gyan,( Ghana) and Adel Tarrabt of Morocco were dropped from the initial list of 10 players. The nomination of the five players reflects a balance of spread as no single country boasts of two nominees. However, the superiority of Francophone talent is clearly reflected as Ayew of Ghana is the sole representative from English-speaking Africa.Meanwhile, Perpetua Nkwocha , Ahmed Musa, Austin Okocha and the Super Falcons are the Nigerian interest in the Award ceremonies as they vie for Best Woman Footballer, Most Improved Talent of The Year and the African Legend title respectively.Either Okocha or Mustapha Hadji of Morocco will be named African Legend on the night. The Super Falcons of Nigeria will also vie with Cameroun's Lionesses and South Africa's Bayana Bayana with African Women Team of The Year. The winners of the various categories of awards will be known at a Gala night in Accra, Ghana on December 22.
