The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan was agog when the Gbenga Opadotun led-administration marked its 100 days in office with a list of achievements to show such as a brand new Toyota 18- seater bus, a new power generating set a ground interlock layout, and many more.Precisely on December 8, 2010, journalists in Oyo State converged on the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan and elected new officers to run the affairs of the union for the next three years. Amazingly, the new executive members, despite various challenges, have been able to break new grounds in running the union in their first 100 days in office.Rolling out drums for celebration, the union state secretariat was a beehive of activities, with the wife of the state governor, Chief (Mrs) Oluwakemi Alao- Akala, leading the team as the special guest.Mrs Alao-Akala also used the opportunity to appeal to journalists to always practise the profession according to the ethics, so that they could inform, educate and entertain the public with accurate information, in order to avert chaos in the society. She said that it was pertinent that journalists confirm stories before going to press.She, therefore congratulated the chairman of Oyo NUJ, Gbenga Opadotun, who she noted, during a short time, made the impossibility possible within the first 100 days.This is a sign of better things to come during his era as the leader of the NUJ because Jimoh ti yio ba dara, ati ojo alamisi ni a o ti mo, meaning a better tomorrow is reflected by what happens today.The union also used the event to appreciate some of their own who have excelled in the pen pushing career. They included the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Culture, Mrs. Grace Amoke Dahunsi; the Executive Director of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Mr. Dada Ogundele; the Deputy Director News and Current Affairs of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) Ibadan Network Centre, Mrs. Shade Haastrup; the Director of News and Current Affairs, Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo state, (BCOS), Mr. Oye Oyewole.On behalf of the awardees, Mrs. Sade Haastrup of the NTA Ibadan commended Mrs. Alao-Akala for honouring the union with her presence.She also said that the Opadotun-led administration had done well, but urged him to do everything in his capacity to ensure a better and realistic salary structure for journalists so that their lives would be better as professionals.In his speech, the NUJ Chairman Oyo State council, Comrade Gbenga Opadotun announced that the state governor, Chief Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala had performed another Oyato feat in the history of Oyo NUJ, saying Governor Alao-Akala surprised us with the brand new bus. In less than two weeks that we got across to him, he gave us a new bus which is the first in the history of the union in the state.Apart from the bus, work on the premises of the Press Centre will commence any moment from now.I also want to thank her excellency for gracing this occasion.
