Jonathan Hails Glo's Golf Efforts, As Umoh Wins Pros Event

Published by Guardian on Sat, 17 Dec 2011

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan yesterday showered praises on telecommunications giant, Globacom Nigeria Limited, for electing to sponsor the annual President Cup Championship, just as he urged other corporate bodies to emulate the firm's sports sponsorship efforts. The President Cup Golf Championship is Nigeria Golf Federation's (NGF) flagship championship held in honour of the sitting president. While also tasking firms and individuals to invest in professional players, jonathan charged professional players in the country to radically improve their game to reciprocate the gesture as no business owner would be pleased to associate with a venture that does not yield success.Jonathan, who was represented by Senate President, David Mark, at the official opening of the 2011 President Cup sponsored by Globacom, said his administration was determined to further engage the abundant energy of the Nigerian youths through productive endeavours like sports, adding that a lot was being done in the area of developing sports from the grassroots in all parts of the country.Though he conceded that the government could not shoulder the responsibility all alone in view of other competing needs, he stressed that sports like professional golf was capable of projecting Nigeria's image in international sporting circles.Earlier in his remarks, President of the NGF, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, informed the president that Globacom had accepted to sponsor the championship in the coming years, even as he urged other firms in the country to join forces with the Federal Government in its bid to revamp sports in the country. He re-affirmed that the federation was out to take the gospel of golfing to far-flung parts of the country and win more converts for the game.Globacom's Director of Events and Sponsorship, Bode Opeseitan said his outfit was delighted to be involved with golf sponsorship, especially at this time that the game's popularity in the country was upswing. He said apart from the firm being the biggest supporter of sports in Nigeria and biggest supporter of football on the African continent, it was supportive of all efforts geared towards producing the world's best golfer from the country.Homeboy, Edet Umoh, came from behind to win the professionals' event, while Mohammed Kabiru finished second. Ghana's Vincent Korblah was joint third with Gift Willy, who led the pack for two days, while another Ghanaian, Vincent Torgah finished fourth.
