Save Nigerian football

Published by Punch on Sun, 18 Dec 2011

On November 29, I watched the Under-23 national team, called The Dream Team lose its second match to Senegal in the qualifiers to determine Africas representatives for the football event at the 2012 Olympics. It was absurd that those were the best players that the Nigerian Football Federation had to parade before the world. It was all the more annoying to hear Stephen Keshi say that the team lost the match because they didnt play to instruction.Evidently, Keshi watched a different match from the one Nigerians watched on the sad day, because there was simply no footballer in that team. The teamfrom the head coach, down to the playersis a misfit. You couldnt figure out a footballer in that team because they all lacked a basic ingredientcommon sense. They also lacked fitness, couldnt mark, and hold the ball or even distribute it.We could have saved ourselves this national embarrassment if we had gone to any of our maternity centers to pick 11 pregnant women who would have performed better than those boys - or is it men'The price we are paying now is what befalls a system that rewards cheats and failures at the expense of hard work. The Under 23 team is a disappointment and an embarrassment to the psyche of the Nigerian people and the board of the NFF must take full responsibility for this show of shame by resigning now.Nelson Ekujumi,ekujuminel@yahoo.com.
