Reactions Trail Recall Of Police Boss

Published by Guardian on Sun, 18 Dec 2011

RESIDENTS in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, have reacted to the recall of former police commissioner,Solaiman Lawal, questioning his handling of security during his tenure. Some of the residents cited separate attacks and bombings of Damaturu, Potiskum and Geidam on November 4 and 26, 2011, saying the attacks, which claimed about 155 lives, resulted from poor handling of security by the former police chief.A lecturer in one of the state's tertiary institutions who spoke to The Guardian yesterday on condition of anonymity said: 'Honestly, the man didn't fare well throughout his stay here. Even his officers and men were always complaining about him. It was surprising how Boko Haram fighters were able to kill that number of policemen and people under his watch.'He brought a large number of policemen to guard his official residence while the bombers continued their killings in the town.'State chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev.Ali Garba, however, stressed that the body does not have anything against the former police commissioner.According to him, 'We have always supported any commissioner of police brought to the state and we will continue to do so.'In any case, we don't have power to influence the posting or redeployment of police officers. We did not bring him here and we cannot ask for the recall of any police chief. It is purely a police affair.
