Akinbobola kicks against suspension by NPL

Published by Punch on Mon, 19 Dec 2011

Suspended member of the Nigeria Premier League board, Akin Akinbobola, said the congress of the football body has no right to suspend him, promising to keep fighting until he gets justice. The sixth congress of the NPL, held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, ended on Saturday with a communiqu that Akinbobola be suspended for issuing provocative and inciting statements against the league board. The suspended member had stayed away from the congress, citing insecurity after he claimed that he had received messages through his phone that he should stay away from Yenagoa for the sake of his life. He said he was shocked at the way his colleagues in the NPL had behaved.I stayed away from the congress because of threat to my life. To my surprise, news came to me that I have been suspended. I am not sure that the congress understands the statues of the NPL. If they do, they will know that it is only the board that has the right to suspend a member. The board can only do so after hearing from the member involved before determining what to do. You cannot suspend someone you dont hear from, he said. This step is taken to distract me from the pursuit of justice. It will not weaken me as I believe in what I am fighting for.Akinbobola is contesting the legality of the election that brought in Chairman of the NPL, Victor Baribote, last September and he is appealing his exclusion from the election. He also claimed that Baribotes camp had the plan to sack the appeal committee and install its own people as a way of ensuring victory over his appeal.
