Oshiomhole blames elite for slow devt

Published by Punch on Mon, 19 Dec 2011

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has said Nigerias ruling elite constitutes the weakest link in the countrys development chain.Oshiomhole accused the political class of creating problems they were unable to wish away.Calling on Nigerians to join hands with President Goodluck Jonathan to get the country out of the woods, the governor called for a departure from the regime of impunity. He argued in Benin on Friday that unless this was done, the country would not grow.Oshiomhole said, As much as all others in various sectors of the country are striving to move Nigeria forward, it has been clear that the political class is the weakest link in the chain. If you do not want defeat, you dont go into a contest. But here you see 10 people contest for a position and the 10 want to win. When they lose, they write results and resort to other unconventional means. At the same time, they appropriate money meant for the people and end with no development. For me, we are happy that in Edo State, things work. A state people considered unworkable is now working and working well.He added, Elsewhere, the country is being confronted by several problems, including Boko Haram threat, kidnapping and an unemployment level that you cannot decree away. President Goodluck Jonathan met on the ground an economy that had been mismanaged over the years, and where recurrent expenditure remains unreasonable.
