Jonathan vows to rescue sports

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has declared full support for sports at various levels in the country in order to bring the best out of Nigerian youths and to make them good ambassadors via sporting activities in the country, Africa and across the globe.The President who spoke at the 2011 President Golf tournament held at the IBB Golf International and Country Club, Abuja, said that the commitment will continue until Nigeria becomes the first among all the sporting nations in the nearest future.The President who was represented by the Senate President David Mark said his love for golf knows no bound, as it is this that made him to order the release of the IBB golf club to the Nigeria Golf Federation last Independence Day celebration via the release of the Certificate of Occupancy for the land.'I am desirous of encouraging sporting activities, not only do people worry about economy, but we have found out that sports has become a veritable tool of furthering our own among the comity of nations and most especially, a sport like golf which is becoming very popular among the youths. We have good golfers around the country and all they need is to be exposed', Mark observed.The Senate President teed off the tournament on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan.Also, the visibly happy President of the Nigeria Golf Federation, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola was full of praises for the major sponsors of the tournament, Globacom Telecommunication Company, some state governments and the Nigerian Police courtesy the Inspector General of Police for funding the tournament this year.He, however, appealed to other corporate sponsors to also embrace the activities of the Federation. He called on state governments to provide a range for golfers in their respective states.The NGF boss also disclosed that 'both the professional and amateur golfers participated in the competition and participants came all the way from West African coast', which made the tournament to be very interesting and highly competitive.Meanwhile the overall winner of the 2011 President Cup, Edet Umoh was very excited and happy for emerging winner in the keenly contested tournament.'I feel very delighted to win this tournament because it wasn't easy playing against other two top golfers like Gift Willy and Kabiru Mohammed in front of me doing very well. But I give the God glory for this feat that I achieved today (Friday)', Umoh disclosed.Umoh on Friday became the winner of the President Cup after a nervy display on the last hole. Umoh saved par on the 18th to run away with a stroke victory, leaving Kabir H. Mohammed who birdied three of the last holes disappointed.
