Published by Daily Trust on Mon, 19 Dec 2011

The Kano State Police Command has arrested four suspected members of the Boko Haram sect in Kano metropolis. The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Idris, who disclosed this to newsmen in Kano yesterday, said the command embarked on an intensive clampdown on the sect's members following their attacks on Kano in the past three days. The police commissioner, who lamented that the sect's members had killed three of his men, said the command had recovered from them items which include, seven AK 47 rifles and three Honda cars suspected to have been snatched, one loaded with assembled five drums of dynamite apparently for suicide bombing.Other items, according to the police chief, are locally made bombs, empty gas cylinder, bags of ammonia nitrate for making explosives, two jerry-cans containing chemicals and 1, 125 rounds of ammunitions. The suspects, according to him, are Abdullahi Ahmed, who was arrested at Kofar Nassarawa with one Honda car with registration number CP 408 RSH; Yunusa Ahmed in whose house chemicals for bomb making were recovered and audio cassettes of the late leader of the sect Mohammed Yusuf.Others are Mohammed Shaluarmi in whose house 12 assorted items for bomb making were also discovered and Mohammed Aliyu whose house was put under surveillance.Aliyu was said to have mobilized his colleagues who killed the three policemen in the recent attack in Kano. The police commissioner explained that Aliyu was arrested at a checkpoint along Maiduguri road, 'and with a thorough search conducted in the vehicle, he was arrested with four AK 47 riffles, one G3 and LAR. Investigations showed that one of the AK47 rifles was snatched from men of the Yobe State Police Command, while the G3 and LAR rifles snatched from policemen during the robbery incident at First Bank, Saminaka branch, Kaduna State'.'Investigations have also shown that all the suspects arrested or declared wanted are non-indigenes who, having made their states inhabitable, fled to Kano to abuse its hospitality', the police commissioner added. He commended members of various communities who provided the information that led to the arrest of the suspects, urging them to continue to resist members of the sect by constantly supplying the security agencies information through the telephone lines given out and the public address boxes provided at various locations in the state. He said the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim had approved a befitting burial for the three slain police officers.
