Surmer, Aregbesola sweep laurels at Karunwi Schools tourney

AMONG the hundreds of students that took part in the maiden Adeyemi Olumide Karunwi Trust Secondary School table tennis championship, Qudus Surmer and Nimota Aregbesola stood out as the most successful, claiming most of the laurels at stake at the tournament.Surmer, who recently won the singles' event at the fourth National School Sports Festival in Calabar, showed why his win in Cross River was not a fluke by claiming gold for his school, Baptist Junior Secondary School, in the team, mixed doubles and doubles events.Aregbesola won virtually everything at stake for Wesley Girls Secondary School in the girls' team, mixed doubles, doubles and singles events. Unlike Aregbesola, who ensured that no player stood between her and the titles, Surmer narrowly lost the boys' singles title to Quazeem Quadri of Archdeacon Adelaja Secondary School.Meanwhile, Surmer and Aregbesola were also adjudged the most valuable players of the competition for their exceptional performance. To claim the boys' team event, Baptist Junior Secondary School had an easy 3-1 win over Okesuna Secondary School, with Surmer spearheading the victory over the Okesuna side.Like what she did in the doubles event, Aregbesola was the star attraction in the girls' team event, ensuring that Modinat Yusuf, who led the Army Cantonment Secondary School, was caged. ThoHoney while are suugh Yusuf wanted to halt Aregbesola's winning streak, she lost concentration when it mattered most to concede victory to the Wesley girls.At the end of the explosive final, it was the Wesley girls that lifted the trophy with a close 3-2 win. As good as Surmer has been throughout the competition, he met his brick-wall in the boys' singles final when he succumbed to the skills of Quadri of Archdeacon Adelaja Secondary School.
