Imo awards N500m contract for Dan Anyiam Stadium's rehabilitation

Published by Guardian on Mon, 19 Dec 2011

DETERMINED to achieve FIFA-required standard in next season's Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Imo State Government has awarded a contract of N500 million for phase by phase rehabilitation of the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Kenneth Emelue, has disclosed.Briefing journalists in Owerri, Emelue said the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has approved the contract for the athletics track, provision of record scoreboard, provision of 12,000-seater and another 12,000 FIFA-standard seat with back rest, rain bed, goal post, cover flags, drainage systems, VIP pavilion up-grad and roofing stands, among other facilities. The commissioner said: 'The governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has awarded N500 million contract for the rehabilitation and provision of FIFA-standard facilities at Dan Anyiam Stadium. The first phase will be completed by March next year.'He was hopeful that if FIFA team comes on inspection by first quarter of next year, the facilities would have been in place for the CAF Cup event.Emelue used the opportunity to dispel the accusation carried against him by an Owerri-based tabloid that he did not provide ground for Imo Students contingent to embark on School Sports in Calabar, stressing that it was the responsibility of the Ministry of Education to carry such task.On the recently held National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt, Emelue stressed that Okorocha approved N60 million out of N170 million the officials in the state applied for because the 2011 budget made provision for only N60 million, stating that the contingent was not formally received in a formal occasion because it came in 13th position.
