Former Crown chairman still in charge ' Akande

Published by Punch on Tue, 20 Dec 2011

Newly-appointed General Manager of Crown Football Club of Ogbomosho, Niyi Akande, is enraged that the former chairman of the club, Gabriel Babalola, was present at the Annual General Meeting of the Nigeria Premier League Board, held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, at the weekend, labeling the move an act of impersonation. The Oyo State Government on November 29 disbanded Crown after the club dropped to the lower National Division One League. The action meant that Babalola and other staff of the club were sent away from office. On December 9, the state appointed Akande, who was the coach of the club last season, as the manager. The position he was offered gave him authority over the way the club would be run. But it has been alleged that Babalola was in Bayelsa as Crown representative at the AGM of the NPL three weeks after leaving office.Akande said, I was informed on Monday that Crown former chairman, Babalola, was in Bayelsa to represent the club after he was sacked by the Oyo State Government. The attitude is strange to me. The status of the clubs finance under him is still under probe and now he is impersonating. How can you represent the club you no longer head'Asked if the NPL sent an invitation to the club ahead of the meeting, Akande explained that the invitation would have been sent to Oyo State Football Association because the club belonged to the state.Such invitation will be received by the FA who will now send it to the club. Leye Adepoju is the chairman of the FA and he congratulated me when I was appointed as Crown manager. I am sure he was not aware of what has happened. It is necessary to find out who invited them to represent us, he said.Akande accused the former chairman of taking the club down despite the huge financial support he received from the state on behalf of the club.
